How Do You Treat an RV Holding Tank?
If you’re like most people, there’s a good chance that at some point in your RVing life you’ll get the dreaded call from your rig’s holding tank: “I’m sorry, but our cleaning service is fully booked until next week.” If that happens to you, and time is of the essence (as it usually is), then what do you do? Let’s explore how do you treat an RV holding tank.
RV Holding Tank Treatment Options
Treating your holding tank is a matter of choosing the right approach for what’s in there: solid materials, chemical residues, or else.
Fortunately, the disposal stations at most campsites will take care of most of it for you, but if you’re short on time or if you want to do something additional to clean things out thoroughly, you have some options to choose from.

# Solid Materials
If there’s the solid material in the tank that’s caused the problem, run an initial treatment product through to dissolve it.
For example, if the caked-on solid material was caused by carbon or other debris in the tank, you might use a product like Break-Free to get that stuff out.
This is optional, but you can start by cleaning the tank out with a product like Break-Free to remove any stubborn solid material that might be causing odor. You’ll probably want to wear gloves and eye protection while mixing this up, and you might want to use rubber or latex gloves when handling it as well.

# Chemical Residues
The problem could also be caused by chemical residues such as vinegar or water softener additives. In those cases, you want to get rid of them on their own.
Your best choice for removing dissolved solids? A product like Sevin or Diazamil . If you’re going to use a product to remove dissolved solids, it’s probably a good idea to also use a product that breaks down any tank odors. That way, you’ll knock out the source of the smell at the same time.
# Treatment with Chemical or Bacterial Products
Your other option is to use an RV holding tank treatment product like Bio-Clean, which utilizes natural bacteria and enzymes to digest and break down your holding tank waste.
